The main feature of the Greek vineyards is the large number of small areas, each with its own particular ecosystem (soil, climate, varieties of vine). These tiny islands of viticulture produce a range of wines, with their own particular distinctive qualities marketed under the name of their region. The place names are legally acknowledged as "appellations d'origine". They are the ambassadors of Greek wine production in the foreign markets, and provide a measure of the quality potential of Greek vineyards. At present, the outlook for the future of commercial Greek wine is more favourable than it has been for many centuries. The name Domaine, which is used by some better Greek wineries is known to produce high quality wines with famous and cosmopolitan grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Syrah and Grenache Red. Cooperative wineries, whose potential in some of the appellation of origin areas is very considerable, are significantly improving the quality of their product. Medium sized individual growers are returning to the Greek bottled-wine market after a long lapse of interest, adopting new technology as their resources permit, as well as employing the services of well-educated oenologists. The results of these developments can be seen in new bottled wines that have appeared in Greece with increased frequency since the mid- 1970s.
Throughout the spectrum of the Greek wine industry it is fervently believed that Greece will, in the twenty-first century, regain the reputation that its wine first earned in ancient times.
